Acne Scar Treatment

Acne goes away, but scars often remain.

Acne clears up, but the scars it leaves behind can remain on the skin for much longer. Acne scars, which manifest as pitting, discoloration, and texture abnormalities, can be significantly reduced or even completely eliminated with the right treatment protocols. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Demet Akpolat creates a personalized treatment plan for each patient by individually evaluating their scar type and skin structure.

Why do acne scars form?

When acne inflammation leaves damage in the skin tissue, collagen production can become irregular during the repair process. This irregularity leads to two different types of scarring:

  • Atrophic scars (pitted scars): Pitting due to collagen loss — icepick, boxcar, and rolling scar types.
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation: Red or brown spots and discoloration left behind after acne.

Which treatments are available?

No single method offers a solution for every type of acne scar. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Demet Akpolat applies the following methods, alone or in combination, depending on the type, depth, and skin structure of the scar:

Fractional CO2 Laser This is one of the most effective methods for deep pitted scars. It triggers collagen regeneration by creating microscopic columns in the skin.

Gold Needle (Fractional Radiofrequency) Radiofrequency energy stimulates collagen production in the deep layers of the skin. It can be safely applied to all skin types.

Dermapen (Microneedling) It is effective for superficial and medium-depth scars. It accelerates skin regeneration and significantly reduces the appearance of scars.

Chemical Peeling It is preferred for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and superficial scars. Skin tone is evened out, and the appearance of blemishes is reduced.

Stem Cell Therapy It accelerates the healing process of scars with growth factors that support tissue repair. When combined with other treatments, it enhances the results.

How does the treatment process work?

  • First step: Skin analysis and scar type determination.
  • Session interval: Every 3-6 weeks, depending on the treatment administered.
  • Suggested number of sessions: 3-6 sessions (varies depending on scar type and depth)
  • After the procedure: Depending on the treatment administered, mild redness may be observed for 24-72 hours.
  • Results: Gradual improvement is observed after each session; the full effect becomes apparent 2-3 months after the completion of treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will acne scars completely disappear? Depending on the type and depth of the scar, most can be significantly reduced, with shallow scars often disappearing completely. For deep pit scars, the goal is to significantly improve their appearance.

Can I get treatment while I have active acne? First, active acne needs to be brought under control. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Demet Akpolat will prepare you for scar treatment by planning acne treatment if necessary.

Which treatment is suitable for my scars? This depends entirely on your scar type, skin structure, and skin tone. A skin analysis will be performed during the initial consultation to determine the most suitable protocol for you.

Can I go out in the sun during treatment? Using high-factor sunscreen is mandatory during treatment. Avoiding intense sun exposure directly affects the longevity of the results.
